Swiss Steak

Rose Marie Fontes Alfonso, Class of 1963

  • 1-1/2 lbs meat
  • 2 Tbsp shortening
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup catsup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp mustard
  • 1 piece garlic, grated
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 bell pepper, large
  • 1 4-oz can mushrooms, stems & pieces

Roll meat in flour, 2 Tbsp, and brown in shortening. Add broth, water, catsup, mustard, garlic and salt. Simmer for 1 hour. Add sliced bell pepper and mushrooms. Simmer for 30 minutes longer.
