Molasses Crinkles

  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ¼ cup light molasses
  • 2¼ cups enriched all purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. ginger
  • ½ tsp. cloves
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

Thoroughly cream shortening and brown sugar. Add beaten egg and molasses, beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients, mix well. Chill thoroughly, or overnight in a covered bowl. Shape into balls the size of walnuts, and dip one side in water then in the granulated sugar. Place sugared side up on ungreased cooky sheet, 2 or 3 inches apart. Bake in moderate oven (350°) for 15 minutes. Makes about 3 dozen big cookies or more.
