Brownies

Cake-type brownies, richly flavored

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 1-oz. squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 3/4 cup sifted enriched flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup broken walnuts

Melt shortening and chocolate together over hot water. Cool. Sift flour with baking powder and salt. Beat eggs until light, add sugar, then chocolate mixture and blend. Add flour, vanilla and nuts. Mix well. Pour batter into greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) 30 to 35 minutes. Cool and cut into squares. Makes 16 brownies.
