Swedish Hard Pepper Cookies

- 3/4 c. cooking syrup
- 3/8 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 egg
- 2 1/2 c. flour
- 1/2 c. shortening
Cook sugar and syrup until sugar is liquid. Cool. Beat into it eggs, cloves and other spices, baking powder sifted with half the flour. Mix other half with shortening. Fold into syrup dough. Roll out very thin, add more flour if necessary. Cut with cookie cutter.
Bake in moderate oven, 350 degrees, about 20 minutes. (If put in refrigerator overnight dough rolls better.)
