Devils Food Cake

Mrs. Masako Kuwaye – Houselots

  • ¾ c shortening
  • 1 7/8 c brown sugar
  • ¾ c boiling water
  • ¾ tsp baking powder
  • 3 sq. bitter chocolate
  • 1½ tsp vanilla
  • 2¼ c flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1½ tsp baking soda
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ¾ c sour milk

Cream shortening, add sugar gradually and cream mixture until light and fluffy. Meanwhile pour the boiling water over chocolate; stir over low flame until smooth and thick. Cool and add to creamed mixture; blend thoroughly.

Sift dry ingredients 3 times then add to chocolate mixture alternately with milk. Beat well after each addition.

Bake in oven at 350° F for 25 to 30 min. Makes 3 – 8 inch layers.
