White Bread
- 2 1/2 lbs. white all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 c. warm evaporated milk
- 2 pkgs. dry yeast or 2 tbsp. bottled yeast
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 2 1/2 c. warm water
In a big pan, put flour, sugar, salt, 1/2 of the shortening and dried yeast. Cut shortening with fingers. Add milk, kneading as you go along. Add warm water, a little at a time, kneading and drying dough before adding more water. When water is all used up, use remaining shortening to knead the dough until it is smooth and shiny right in the bowl. Cover dough and let rise until 3 times its size. Shape into loaves or buns, etc. Let rise and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes for loaves and 25 minutes for buns.
