Rice – How to Cook Rice

Important facts to remember.

  1. Use heavy saucepan.
  2. Use saucepan large enough to allow for rice expansion.
  3. Old crop rice absorbs more water than new crop rice. Therefore, add 1½ tablespoons additional water to a cup.
  4. When cooking large quantities of rice, use Method III.
  5. Use equal amount of rice and water.
  6. Electric rice cookers may be used for rice recipes in which chicken, clams, vegetables, etc. are added. Just combine ingredients and cook according to directions given by the manufacturer.

METHOD I.

  • 3 cups rice
  • 3 cups water

Wash rice and add water. Cover saucepan and bring to a boil. Then turn heat very low and steam 15 minutes. Turn off heat and let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

METHOD II.

  • 3 cups rice
  • 3 cups water

Wash rice and add water. Cover saucepan and bring to a boil. Turn off heat for 5 minutes. Then steam on low heat for 8-10 minutes. Turn off heat and let it stand for 10 minutes.

METHOD III.

  • 3 cups rice
  • 3 cups water

Wash rice and soak in water to cover for 4-5 hours. When ready to cook, drain rice in colander. Put 3 cups water in saucepan and bring to a boil. Add rice, mix well, and cover. When it starts to boil, turn heat very low and steam 20 minutes. Turn off heat and let it stand for 10 minutes before serving.
