“Baked On” Icing Cake

  • 3/4 cup Crisco
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1¼ cups buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/3 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Icing:

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds

Beat the Crisco, brown sugar, egg yolks, soda, buttermilk, and vanilla together thoroughly. Add the sifted dry ingredients. Mix well. Pour into 8 x 12-inch pan.

Beat egg whites stiff and add sugar slowly. Spread carefully over unbaked batter. Sprinkle with almonds. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.
