Sourdough Cake

On the day you receive sourdough starter you must feed it: 1 c. flour, 1 c. milk, 1/2 c. sugar. You feed it on the 1st day and on the 5th day. You will bake it on the 10th day. Keep the starter refrigerated in a large bowl or pitcher because it grows! Cover it loosely. Be sure to stir it every day. On baking day, measure out 1 c. of starter for baking, feed it milk, flour and sugar as above. Measure out 1 more cup of starter and give it to a friend along with its care and feeding instructions.

Now put the remaining 2 cups of batter in a large mixing bowl and add:

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. oil
  • 1/2-1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. nuts or raisins (opt.)

Mix well at medium speed; pour into well greased and floured 9×13″ pan, or bundt pan and top with the following topping:

  • 1 tbsp. flour
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. melted butter

Mix and heat, pour over dough using a fork, swirl through the cake. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until done. After the cake is cooled, glaze with:

  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp. milk

Boil 3-4 minutes and spoon over cooled cake.
