Prize-Winning Spice Nut Cake

  • 2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons Calumet Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup nutmeats, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Sift 7 dry ingredients together. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs together until light and fluffy. Add flour mixture alternately with the combined milk and flavoring; beat well. Fold in floured nutmeats. Bake in greased 8-inch cake pans, lined with waxed paper. Bake at 365 degrees for about 25 minutes. Put cooled cake together with Sea Foam Frosting and garnish with whole or chopped nutmeats.
