Prize-Winning Chocolate Cake

  • 2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 2 teaspoons Calumet Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cup Crisco
  • 1 2/3 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 1/8 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift flour with baking powder, salt, and soda. Cream crisco and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating very well. Then blend in melted chocolate. Add flour mixture alternately with the milk, a small amount at a time, beating after each addition until smooth. Add vanilla; blend. Pour batter into two 9-inch greased pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes, or until cake tester inserted comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pans; then remove from pans and cool thoroughly on racks. Frost with Seven-Minute Frosting and drizzle unsweetened melted chocolate over top.
