Prune Cake (1st prize County Fair)

 

1-3/4 blocks butter
1 cup sugar
3 cups flour, cake type preferred
3 tsp. baking powder
5 eggs (2-1/2 whites for frosting, 5 yolks and 2-1/2 whites for cake)
1 cup stewed and sieved prunes
3/4 cups juice (half prune juice and half milk; keep separate)
2 tsp. baking soda dissolved in a little prune juice.
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
pinch of salt

Cream butter and sugar, add slightly beaten egg yolks and whites. Add prune juice alternating with milk and dry ingredients. Add baking soda and juice last. Bake in two 9-inch greased and paper lined pans for 35 minutes at 375 F or until done. Frost with boiled frosting mixed with prune pulp.
