Original Cooks of the Big Island

The recipes on this site are scanned from vintage Hawaii cookbooks that are available in hard-copy only. We scanned them to ensure that they are preserved for the future, both for historical purposes and as a fantastic reference for all home cooks and bakers.

Some of these cookbooks include the names and home demonstration council regions of the people who contributed recipes. When available, we tag the recipes with these names and regions to help tell a story about the people and places behind these recipes.

One of the cookbooks that highlights contributor names is Favorite Recipes For Islanders published by the Hilo County Home Demonstration Council.
