Simplified Meaonopuaa (Steamed Pork Bun)
Bun:
1 box hot roll mix - Make the mix according to directions on the box a set aside to rise. (Takes about 2 hours to rise)
Filling:
1/2 lb. ground pork
2 tbsp. sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 piece of garlic, minced
1/2 inch piece of ginger, minced
1/2 tsp. red food coloring
1/4 cup of chopped choy suey potato or ½ can of water chestnut, chopped
1/4 cup green onions, chopped fine
Mix the first six ingredients. Fry the ground pork until well done and drain the excess fat. Add the chop suey potato and green onions and continue cooking until the vegetables are cooked.
Knead the dough with some flour on a board until springy. Divide the dough in twelve pieces. Flatten each piece and fill it with the pork filling. Pinch the edges together to seal the filling in. Place the dough, pinched side down on a buttered piece of paper (a round piece of paper, cut 2 inches in diameter). Dab butter (soft or melted) on top of the dough and set them aside to rise. When the dough begins to rise, place them on a rack and steam for 20 minutes.
Steamer: Use a roasting pan with a rack. Place 3 empty cans of sausage or tuna to raise the rack, and fill the pan with¾ to 1 inch of water.
