Portuguese Sweet Bread

 

25 c flour
6 c sugar
1 lb oleomargarine
2 T salt
10 cakes yeast
1 qt milk
20 eggs
1 tsp mace or 2 tsp anise seed

Cream oleomargarine and sugar and add slightly beaten eggs.

Heat milk to boiling and when lukewarm, add yeast.

Add all ingredients to flour and start kneading, adding milk as needed. Set to rise, When double in bulk, press dough down and let rise again. Set in loaf pan or round pan. To hasten rising, set bowl of dough in warm oven.

When double in bulk, brush tops with beaten egg, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Boke at 255 F for about 1 hour. For rolls, bake for only 1/2 hour.
